Fibroids are benign tumours of the smooth muscle of the uterus that are very commonly seen in the reproductive years (they are found in almost one in every 4 to 5 women).
They can often cause pain in the groin and the lower back, or heavy or irregular bleeding. Some may give no sign at all. These formations that appear in the wall of the uterus can cause different signs according to their size and number.
For the treatment of fibroids, regular follow-up and, if necessary, medical treatment and, in selected cases, surgery may be required. But treatment does not necessarily have to be given whenever a fibroid is seen.
Especially if it causes no complaint at all, if its size is stable and not increasing, and if there is nothing in the imaging to suggest that it is malignant, follow-up alone is sufficient. Although, as a result of drug studies carried out in recent years, medicines have been developed that keep the size of fibroids under control and make them shrink, it should be known that these medicines do not completely eliminate the fibroids. Most of them cannot be used over a long period. Even when no treatment is needed at the time fibroids are detected, it is very important that regular follow-up is certainly carried out.
ARE THERE ALTERNATIVE METHODS IN THE TREATMENT OF FIBROIDS?
The answer to this question cannot be given very clearly as yes. It is very important that these formations, which in the long term can cause abnormal vaginal bleeding, anaemia, infertility, severe groin and lower back pain and miscarriages, are kept under medical supervision. If the fibroid formations are small in size and their location poses no problem for the person’s health (pelvic pain, abnormal vaginal bleeding, infertility, cancer), follow-up alone is sufficient.
However, if serious clinical complaints occur due to the fibroids or if the size of the fibroids has increased, surgery is required.
The most basic reason for trying a herbal cure in the treatment of fibroids is the belief that the uterus has to be removed in fibroid operations. In most of the surgical procedures performed for fibroids, the operation can be completed while the uterus is preserved. Although many women look into herbal treatment (a cure) for fibroids, it should unfortunately not be forgotten that there is no information about the clinical effectiveness of these cures in terms of treatment. For this reason it is worth reminding once again those patients who think that their fibroids will disappear or shrink because they follow a herbal cure: if fibroids are not treated correctly, uncontrolled growth may make it necessary to remove the entire uterus. Although the benefit of these herbal treatments has not been proven, one of the most important questions is that it is not known what their use will do in the body. In other words, while trying to treat, they can cause other conditions. As a result, we do not recommend their use before they have been proven effective and known not to harm the human body.
WHAT ARE THE SIGNS OF FIBROIDS?
Fibroid formations most of the time show no sign and cause no health problem. However, if there are signs such as heavy bleeding and pain during menstruation, pain in the pelvic area, an increased urge to urinate, chronic constipation and/or pain during sexual intercourse, the possibility of fibroids must certainly be taken into consideration. It should not be forgotten that a regular gynaecological examination is very important for women and that in this way any fibroid formation can be noticed at an early stage.
