In situations where medication is not sufficient for treatment, the best surgical method used today is robotic surgery. With this method a wide range of gynaecological conditions can be treated, including cancer of the uterus, cancer of the cervix, uterine fibroids (benign tumours of the uterus), endometriosis (chocolate cyst disease), prolapse of the uterus and abnormal uterine bleeding. Especially in situations that can put the patient’s life at risk, such as cancer or uncontrolled bleeding (not responding to other treatments), the uterus is removed by surgery.

These operations used to be carried out through a single large incision, also known among the public as open surgery. Today, however, they can be performed in a minimally invasive way with robotic surgery or laparoscopic surgery, which our people call closed surgery. In recent years, robotic surgery, which is becoming increasingly widespread all over the world and is quite similar to the laparoscopic method, is preferred more often.

THE ADVANTAGES OF ROBOTIC SURGERY

The main reason why robotic surgery is preferred especially in the treatment of working women is that the recovery time is much shorter. Performing the operation through incisions smaller than 1 cm instead of through a single large incision makes the recovery process much shorter. In this way patients can return to their working lives and daily lives in a much shorter time. In addition, because the operation is performed through small incisions, care after the operation during the recovery process also becomes easier. After the operation there is only very mild pain in the areas where the incisions were made. Problems relating to the wound site are seen very rarely.

Furthermore, the size of the incisions means that no large surgical scar remains, in other words it also allows a better appearance from a cosmetic point of view. About a year later these surgical scars become almost impossible to make out when looked at from outside.

THE OPERATIONS IN WHICH ROBOTIC SURGERY IS USED

Today the great majority of gynaecological operations can be performed successfully thanks to the robotic surgery method.

Hysterectomy, in which the uterus is removed; endometriosis (chocolate cyst disease) operations; myomectomy operations in which fibroids causing heavy bleeding, abdominal pain and infertility are cleared; oophorectomy operations in which both ovaries are removed because of an ovarian cyst or other ovarian disorders; situations in which prolapse of the uterus has occurred; cancer of the uterus or the cervix and ovarian cancer; the clearing of adhesions; and operations relating to pelvic pain can all be performed successfully with the robotic surgery technique. The fact that this robotic surgery method can be used in the treatment of the most common gynaecological conditions has enabled it to spread rapidly throughout the world.
