The chocolate cyst is a problem frequently seen in women of reproductive age. Especially in women who have severe period pain, the rate at which the chocolate cyst is seen is as high as 60%. For this reason women need to follow their menstrual periods and, if they experience a situation that is out of the ordinary, to go to a specialist without fail. Although it is known that approximately 2 million women in Turkey have the problem of a chocolate cyst, women’s awareness on this subject is unfortunately not at a sufficient level. It is very important, especially for young girls, to become informed on this subject and to have regular check-ups so as not to experience problems such as infertility in the long term.
Period Pain Is Not an Obligation
Women who have a difficult time during their period accept this situation. Pain in the groin and lower abdominal area and excessive bleeding can in fact be a sign of a chocolate cyst. However, in our country there is a situation of accepting period pain as a habit passed from mothers to their daughters. Especially in conditions such as fibroids and the chocolate cyst, where the probability of being linked to family history and genetic factors is high, women need to be more careful. If in a person’s family there are women who cannot become pregnant or who have recurrent miscarriages, chocolate cysts or fibroid formations should be looked for behind this problem.
There Is No Need to Be Old Enough
Although it is thought that women’s conditions appear with advancing age, when it comes to the chocolate cyst every woman between the ages of 15 and 50 is in the risk group. The chocolate cyst, which is seen only rarely before puberty and after entering the menopause, appears far more frequently after the age of 25. Whereas under normal conditions, that is, in fertile women between the ages of 15 and 50, the rate at which endometriosis is seen is 10%, this rate is 60% in women with severe period pain and 70% in women whose mother or sibling has the problem of endometriosis. For this reason it is very important both that young girls talk with the women in their family and that they do not overlook severe period pains. Just as advancing endometriosis can cause problems that lower a person’s quality of life, it can also bring with it problems such as infertility or miscarriage.
