Robotic surgery is the most advanced and the newest of the minimally invasive surgical techniques. With the robotic system, in which a thin and illuminated camera and small surgical instruments are controlled, almost all gynaecological operations in particular can be performed without problems.
While in the method known among the public as open surgery a single large incision has to be made in order to reach the operating field, with the laparoscopic method the same operation can be performed through several incisions smaller than 1 cm. Robotic surgery is quite similar to laparoscopic surgery. Although there are many differences between the two, one of the biggest is the way the doctor controls the surgical instruments.
Robotic Surgery Operations
All operations that can be performed with the laparoscopic method in the field of gynaecology can also be performed with robotic surgery. Robotic surgery has important advantages especially in situations where the operating field is narrow and small and where areas that are difficult for the doctor to reach have to be operated on. Thanks to the 3D camera, detailed imaging of the operating field is possible, and thanks to the precise robotic arms it is possible to work in very narrow areas without harming the surrounding tissues in any way. The fact that these arms can also perform manoeuvres and rotations that the human wrist cannot makes it possible to carry out complicated operations more easily.
The Advantages of Robotic Surgery
The robotic surgery method provides important advantages both to the patient and to the doctor performing the operation. The doctor carrying out the operation controls the robotic arms from a console in a seated position. In addition, the fact that the robotic arms move while damping the tremor of the hand can also make operations easier.
On the patient’s side, performing the operation through small incisions has advantages such as reducing to a minimum the risk of problems like infection at the incision sites after the operation, and leaving no noticeable scar afterwards. Carrying out the operation through small incisions makes the recovery process both more comfortable and shorter. Performing the operation through small incisions also reduces bleeding during the operation and lowers the amount of blood that will be needed.
Today many operations are performed with this new-generation technology, above all myomectomy, ovarian cyst surgery, endometriosis (chocolate cyst) surgery, hysterectomy (removal of the uterus), prolapse operations, surgery to open blocked tubes and gynaecological cancer operations.
