Thanks to developing technology and medicine, it is now possible to achieve ground-breaking results in surgical operations. Thanks to robotic surgery, which makes it possible to operate in areas that cannot be seen with the eye and cannot be reached by hand, life-saving results are being obtained.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Taner Usta, specialist in obstetrics and gynaecology, while making highly useful explanations about robotic surgery, which today has many advantages, also answered for us all the question marks that come to mind about its effect on scar formation.

Robotic surgery is widely preferred, besides obstetrics and gynaecology, in many fields from urology to general surgery, from plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgical operations to cardiovascular surgery. One of the most important pluses of robotic surgery is that the formation of a surgical scar is not seen.

A scar can form as a result of surgical operations, burns, injuries and skin infections. Scar formations are also called “cicatrices”. The scar tissue that appears at the end of the wound healing process in fact comes about as a result of the body producing excessive collagen in order to repair itself.

During the healing process the skin tissue is replaced by connective tissue. In this case a new tissue appears that has differences in colour, texture and pigmentation from the person’s normal skin tissue. Depending on the size of the scar tissue, psychological problems may arise in the person. To remove these formations, different procedures such as surgery and laser application are performed.

In order for the skin to form again in a healthy way, the appearance of the area can be improved with a peeling procedure that will not create trauma, with burning by laser, or with the removal of the scar by surgery.

IT BOTH PREVENTS AND REDUCES THE RISK

Thanks to robotic surgery applications, preventing the formation of a scar is not impossible. Thanks to robotic surgery, which makes it possible to perform comfortably, through very small incisions, operations that would require large incisions to be made, both the formation of a scar is prevented and, because the size of the wound remaining after the operation is smaller, the risk of infection is reduced.

THE RECOVERY PROCESS IS NOW MORE COMFORTABLE

At the heart of operations performed with robotic surgery lies entering through a small incision and thereby carrying out the operation comfortably. Under normal conditions it is possible to reach, with incisions smaller than 1 cm, an area that a surgeon could reach with incisions of 10 to 15 cm. In this way blood loss during the operation decreases, the recovery process after the operation becomes easier and the scar is reduced to a minimum.
