Urinary incontinence is a condition that directly affects a person’s social life, is frequently encountered especially in women, and needs to be taken seriously.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Taner Usta, specialist in obstetrics and gynaecology, underlined that urinary incontinence is not a fate that has to be accepted and gave important information about the questions people wonder about and about the solution.
Very Common Especially in Women
It is a known fact that the problem of urinary incontinence is very common among women. However, this problem is mostly hidden. In 70 out of every 100 women with the problem of urinary incontinence, the situation comes to light when they go to the doctor for other reasons. Because urinary incontinence can bring with it problems such as depression, loss of self-confidence, loss of sexual desire or fear of sexuality, it is a condition that must certainly be treated within a short time.
At the top of the factors leading to urinary incontinence is excess weight. This is because the increase in pressure inside the abdomen with excess weight puts the urinary tract at risk. Doing regular pelvic floor exercises to strengthen the muscles can be helpful in this respect. Strengthening the muscles has positive effects on the organ that holds the urine. While difficult and traumatic births increase the risk of urinary incontinence, caesarean and vaginal births do not have an important effect on this problem. However, having many births, an assisted birth and a birth that lasts longer than normal can invite urinary incontinence.
What Are the Treatment Methods for Urinary Incontinence?
The treatments for urinary incontinence are preventive treatment, drug treatment and surgery. The cause of the problem is quite decisive in choosing which treatment method will be used. If the problem of urinary incontinence is experienced because of causes such as weakening of the ligaments that hold the bladder, bladder tumours and prolapse of the uterus, surgery may be required. However, the surgery performed is quite simple and makes it possible for the person to return to normal life within a day. Especially today, because robotic surgery is becoming increasingly widespread in the field of medicine, urinary incontinence operations are also performed very successfully with robotic surgery. In procedures performed with robotic surgery the results are quite satisfying.
In non-surgical treatments of urinary incontinence, the aim is to correct the problem with exercises performed on the person’s pelvic muscles. With exercises continued regularly for up to 10 weeks depending on the person’s physical condition, the problem of urinary incontinence can be resolved. If the problem of urinary incontinence has appeared during pregnancy, the birth is awaited before deciding on treatment. Since the problem of urinary incontinence appearing in pregnancy is mostly temporary, observing this process is important for the right treatment decision.
