Today this situation is found in almost one in every two women, especially in older women. In our country this rate is estimated to be slightly above the world average. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Taner Usta, specialist in obstetrics and gynaecology, explained for us all the questions people wonder about advanced-technology robotic surgery in the treatment of the uterine and bladder prolapse that turns women’s lives into a nightmare.

Although prolapse has many causes, among the most common are having many births, a history of difficult birth, prolonged labour, genetic factors, chronic constipation, smoking and obesity.

BLADDER AND UTERINE PROLAPSE CAN BE TREATED AT THE SAME TIME

The descent of the uterus from its place due to the weakening of the muscles and ligaments that hold the bladder, the uterus and the bowel in place is called “uterine prolapse”. Uterine prolapse is often accompanied by prolapse in the bladder and the rectal area.

In addition, uterine prolapse can also occur in people who have previously had uterine or vaginal operations. Depending on the site and the stage of the prolapse, it can be treated with operations performed vaginally or through the abdominal cavity.

WITH ROBOTIC SURGERY, THE NEW-GENERATION TREATMENT METHOD, UTERINE PROLAPSE CAN BE TREATED SUCCESSFULLY

Robotic surgery, which has found a major place in the field of medicine over the last twenty years, is today most often chosen for gynaecology and urology operations. With this method, a more advanced version of the classic laparoscopic method, the limitations of the laparoscopic method disappear.

The arms of the Da Vinci robot, with cameras that magnify dozens of times and provide a three-dimensional image, give extensive information about the operating area. In addition, because it can reach very deep places, a comfortable and safe working environment is created in these areas.

Thanks to the three-dimensional imaging technology, which also includes depth, the operation can be completed without causing any damage to the delicate tissue surrounding the operating area.

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF ROBOTIC SURGERY AFTER THE OPERATION?

Operations performed with new-generation robotic devices belong, just like the laparoscopic method, to the field of minimally invasive gynaecological surgery. In other words, in robotic surgery too the patient is treated during the operation with the smallest possible number of interventions. This also means less bleeding during the operation and less need for blood.

Because the operations are carried out through small incisions, the risk of complications such as infection after the operation is also reduced to a minimum. In this way patients can be discharged more quickly after the operation and return to their social lives sooner.

Another important advantage that comes with robotic surgery is that, because only a small incision is needed, no noticeable scar remains after the operation. The scars that appear after the operation become invisible to the eye within about a year.
