Why laparoscopy?
Laparoscopy is a method used both for diagnosis and for treatment. Thanks to this method, instead of the large incisions that leave scars and that have to be made in order to apply surgical methods, it can become possible to carry out a surgical procedure by making an incision of at most 1 cm. The technique, which in the past was used intensively for diagnosis, has today, with the developing medical technologies, also become usable for treatment.
Situations in which laparoscopy is used
Laparoscopy is today one of the most preferred methods in situations such as uterine prolapse, bladder prolapse, urinary incontinence and vaginal prolapse. Besides these, this method is frequently chosen in the diagnosis and treatment of infertility, and in situations such as the chocolate cyst, fibroids, ectopic pregnancy, tying the tubes for contraception and removal of the uterus. In addition, another point that should be known is that the wide range of areas in which laparoscopy can be applied increases the success rate of IVF treatment, especially in women who have a chocolate cyst or fibroids.
Infertility and laparoscopy
Laparoscopy is a quite important technique in infertility treatments. Because thanks to this technique we can obtain far clearer results. Tubes that appear closed on the hysterosalpingogram can be seen as open with laparoscopy. Direct visualisation is quite important for the sensitivity of the process and for a correct assessment. Thanks to this technique, in the diagnosis of infertility we reach a clear result with a single procedure instead of two different procedures. Because the results obtained with the hysterosalpingogram are not 100% reliable, if there is a doubtful situation on the film, a definite assessment is made possible with the laparoscopic technique. Instead of a re-assessment, applying this technique from the outset directly for diagnosis and saving time. This is very important for starting the correct treatment.
What awaits you after the operation?
Because laparoscopy is a procedure carried out under general anaesthetic, it causes people to be afraid. However, not every procedure carried out under general anaesthetic obliges you to stay in hospital or causes you to experience serious pain. Laparoscopic procedures are completed within approximately 2 hours and, if the person feels physically well and their doctor also approves, they can return home the same day. After the operation, serious pains as in open surgical techniques do not occur. For this reason the person can return to their daily life in a shorter time.
